Godzilla: King of the Monsters also known by the working title of "Fathom" is an upcoming American monster film directed by Michael Dougherty and written by Dougherty, Zach Shields and Max Borenstein. It is the sequel to 2014's Godzilla and will be the 35th film in the Godzilla franchise, the third film in Legendary's MonsterVerse, and the third Godzilla film to be completely produced by a Hollywood studio. Despite the film's title, it is unrelated to the 1956 film of the same name. The film stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi.
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species – thought to be mere myths – rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance.

As Godzilla: King of the Monsters continues stomping towards its 2019 release date with Krampus director Michael Dougherty leading the charge, the filmmaker released the first very rough image of the monster’s return.
Gareth Edwards directed 2014’s Godzilla, which saw nature’s guardian rise from the sea to do battle against gargantuan beasts. Based on what we know is coming, humanity will need Godzilla’s help again.
This cinematic universe expanded with Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island, which ended with a post-credits scene that teased the introduction of classic monsters Mothra, Rodan, and the three-headed King Ghidorah.
It sounds like the film is shaping up to be one of the biggest giant monster films, and that’s saying something. We’ll find out when Godzilla vs. Kong hits theaters on May 22, 2020.
